"Urban Encounters" Doc Films by University of Chicago
The City in Middle Eastern Cinema Urban spaces are often the central locations or intersections for the production of social and cultural identities. And it is within the city that these identities are exchanged and manipulated, fostering historical shifts that are inscribed both in the city itself and beyond. This film series intends to spark reflection upon the Middle Eastern city as a location for exchange, full of gray areas between high and low culture, official and popular positions. The Middle Eastern city, in other words, becomes a stage upon which identity and all of its variations is performed and considered.
